Pronunciation Guide
Japanese is consistent and syllable-based:
- Vowels: a (ah), i (ee), u (oo), e (eh), o (oh)
- Consonants: close to English, except “r” (between r/l)
- Pitch Accent: some words change meaning with pitch (e.g. hashi = chopsticks vs bridge)
Good news: Once you know Hiragana, you can pronounce nearly anything correctly.

- Romaji vs Kana: Romaji is only for learners. Kana is used by everyone in Japan.
- Mixing scripts: A normal sentence can contain all three (Kanji + Hiragana + Katakana).
- Do I need all 2,000 Kanji? No! Start with the most frequent ones — about 300 covers most signs.
